18 Injured in Amtrak Train Wreck

Eighteen people were injured Wednesday night when two Amtrak trains, one from the Central Valley, collided in Oakland.

One train, the Coast Starlight, was parked in the Jack London Square station loading passengers when the other, the San Joaquin arriving from Bakersfield, collided with it at an estimated 15 to 20 mph.

According to Oakland Fire Department battalion chief Emon Usher, an Amtrak representative told him the train traveling had gone through a red light.

Authorities originally reported 16 injures in the crash, but an Amtrak spokesman said the company re-counted overnight and arrived at the higher figure.
